Class of 2004 takes up endowment fund challenge
The Class of 2004 raised $120,053.77 for its endowment fund for Baby Bison scholarships, surpassing its goal by Homecoming. The Office of Annual Giving commends Layne Eskridge (’04, B.A.) and Samantha Wilson (’04, BBA) for their fundraising leadership. The Class of 2005 is ready to dethrone the Class of 2004’s record.
The Class of 2004 picks up the challenge from the Class of 2003, which raised $49,970.72 for its endowment fund, almost halfway to its $100,000 target, under the leadership of Tanesha Willis (’03, BBA) and Alex Dixon (’03, BBA).

Yassine Fall, minister of African integration and foreign affairs for Senegal, rose from modest beginnings to being a global leader in activism for social justice and economic empowerment across the continent. Fall credits her time at Howard University, where she earned a master’s degree in economics, as an experience that rooted her in the world at large and instilled in her the importance of giving back.

The 16-year-old was away from her Detroit home for the adventure of a lifetime, going to Howard University and moving into Wheatley Hall in the Harriet Tubman Quadrangle. But she found more than a place to stay; she helped establish a sisterhood.

Howard’s homecoming has boasted the most-searched homecoming according to Google. During Homecoming 100, Metro, the Washington-area transit agency, declared that Saturday as having the highest ridership on record for the Shaw-Howard University subway station. The second annual Divine Nine Brunch was a resounding, sold-out success. Part of the Back the Yard 2024 Homecoming Giving Challenge, the brunch raised more than $30,000 from alumni of sororities and fraternities, as well as University friends to support students. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority received top honors for raising the most money and having the greatest number of participants in the fundraising challenge.

The Howard University Alumni Association is celebrating its diamond anniversary.
Since 1964, HUAA has provided 60 years of service to Howard graduates and built bonds with them around the globe. HUAA will mark this milestone anniversary over the next year with events, activations and merchandise, said Kandace L. Harris (’97 B.A., ’01 M.A., ’05 PhD), HUAA president.

This past Saturday, Howard University and Hampton University squared off for the 100th time in the Truth and Service Classic, continuing one of the longest-standing rivalries in HBCU football. Audi Field was packed with 16,813 fans, all eager to witness another chapter in the storied “Battle of the Real HU.” Dating back to 1908, this rivalry has seen countless intense matchups, and this year’s game was no exception. Although Hampton came away with a 27-20 victory, the Bison fought hard, adding to the legacy of this historic competition.

Homecoming at Howard University was special for Michael Heiserman (’63, Bachelor of Architecture). While he was deep into his studies at the School (now College) of Architecture (CEA), Heiserman helped build a float for the annual Homecoming parade for the Army Corps cadets because he was in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). He also borrowed the car that towed the float from an area Cadillac dealership.

Join us at the Second Annual Divine Nine Homecoming Fundraising Brunch on Friday, Oct. 18. The goal of this challenge is to support any HU Homecoming campaign and the Impact Howard Funds, which are a collection of unrestricted giving opportunities designed to offer you a greater choice in where you direct your generosity. The contest will focus on the amount raised and the participation rate. The highlight of this event will be the celebration of the 1974 fraternity and sorority lines that were initiated 50 years ago.
