Drummond moves from design student to dynamic studio founder

Jimmie J. Drummond III (’13, BFA) is the visionary interdisciplinary designer and principal of Drummond Project behind several Washington, D.C., establishments, all of which celebrate a diverse cultural identity and narrative. Drummond is recognized and praised for his remarkable ability to approach projects as he would his own home, curating dynamic, thoughtful and immersive spaces.
After graduating from Howard with a degree in interior design, Drummond earned a dual master’s degree in architecture and lighting from Parsons School of Design. In 2015, he founded Drummond Projects, an interdisciplinary design studio dedicated to architectural innovation, design equity through lighting design and cultural resilience as the lead builder of many of his projects. Drummond is originally from Prince George’s County, Maryland, and is the child of two Howard alumni.
“I always felt a deep connection to Howard. I chose an HBCU — specifically Howard — because I wanted to be immersed in a community that celebrates Black excellence, history and culture while continuing my family’s legacy,” said Drummond.
Drummond took full advantage of his time at Howard, participating in the Gentlemen of Drew Social Club, serving as treasurer of the HU 2012 Homecoming Steering Committee, and serving as a chair of the Student Activities Policy Board. Drummond believes that Howard shaped him professionally and personally.
“From the energy of Homecoming to the growth I experienced during my study abroad semester in London, from the student leadership roles to making the pivotal switch from architecture to design, each moment helped sharpen my vision,” said Drummond.
Following a period in New York where he worked for companies including SHoP Architects and Bernheimer Architecture, Drummond returned to the D.C. area to share the knowledge and network he acquired.
“I returned for the opportunity to make an impact on our constructed environment. I was able to reconnect with the University as an adjunct professor in the interior design department. I’m most about uplifting the next generation as we climb together,” said Drummond.
For many, including Drummond, uplifting the next generation of Howard students involves giving back to the University. Drummond finds resources essential regardless of whether they take the form of mentorship, time or financial support.
“When we engage with each other, we strengthen the entire village. Every bit contributes to a larger ecosystem of success for future generations. We’re stronger when we show up for each other,” said Drummond.
No matter where his career takes him, Drummond seeks to ensure that Howard University’s legacy continues. Through his work, instruction, creativity and generosity, Drummond not only honors the foundation that helped mold him — but also helps pave the way for future design visionaries to thrive. Drummond’s ambitious and thoughtful approach to his career illustrates the importance of investing in community to build spaces that inspire others.
