Kiera Thomas: Sports and Athletics Is the Avenue to Health Care Resources

Kiera Thomas (SOC ’14) is vice president and co-founder of Hoop for All, a nonprofit organization that uses sports and athletics to connect communities with access to health care resources such as health professionals, health educational materials, testing and inpatient assistance. The Howard University alumna who majored in strategic communications founded the organization along with classmate and Howard alumnus Ayo Amoo (HUSB ’14) in 2017.

Saturday, March 11 was an exciting time in Norfolk, Virginia, for alumni of Howard University and Norfolk State University, as the men’s and women’s basketball teams for both institutions made it to the championship game for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Howard University men’s basketball team came from behind to win the game, marking the first NCAA Tournament berth for the team since 1992.

When she moved to the District of Columbia, two goals were foremost: “Seek out a place of worship and engage with an HBCU. Rankin Chapel fulfilled those two goals and opened their doors for me to serve.”
