Chevron and Howard University: A partnership that withstands time

By Simone Denard
Chevron has been a valued partner of Howard University for years, graciously donating more than $1.5 million to the University. Chevron’s contributions come in the form of donations and through programming and facilities that propel the academic and professional careers of countless Howard students. Many Howard alumni are employees of Chevron and actively return to Howard’s campus to inform students of the opportunities at Chevron and assist with overall professional development.
Tammikka Caldwell (’92, BBA, magna cum laude) attended the School of Business. She is currently a finance program manager at Chevron. Caldwell accredits her time at Howard for her success in her role at Chevron.
“Some of the things I walked away with include a strong competency in finance. I walked away with a strong sense of who I was and confidence in my ability to perform well post-college graduation,” said Caldwell.
Caldwell graduated from Howard knowing that her experiences as a student prepared her to compete and thrive in corporate America. Caldwell expressed the importance of remaining flexible and adaptable while working for Chevron because the company constantly evolves. She says she remains ahead of the curve by staying organized and open to change.
Chevron and its employees ensure that students are well acquainted with the company, carefully crafting a presence on campus. She has worked with Howard directly, building relationships with professors and students. “The students I have met, mentored and worked with over the last couple of years now come to understand the culture of Chevron and have embraced us being involved in their lives,” said Caldwell, emphasizing her strong desire to see students succeed post-graduation.
Chevron has also invested in two laboratories on campus, which serve as additional resources for students to achieve their academic goals. Programming such as volunteer events, career fairs and Chevron informational meetings allow Howard students to interact with Chevron employees and learn more about the company.
Nell Reed (’05, B.S.), works in executive communications at Chevron and believes that giving back to Howard is essential no matter the amount or method.
“Donating is the vessel; it keeps the institution going,” said Reed. “We might not be able to donate our funds, but we can always figure out how to contribute. Can we donate our time or ask the organizations we work for to donate to Howard?”
Reed recalled the Howard staff and alumni who selflessly poured into her and encouraged others to ponder the same when considering donating to the university.
Chevron’s long-standing partnership with Howard University demonstrates the importance of corporate partnerships and the significance of donations. Chevron’s investment in education and career development at Howard will help empower and uplift students preparing to enter the workforce. Alumnae like Tammikka Caldwell and Nell Reed serve as reminders that giving back can be completed through numerous avenues, but all forms help to continue Howard’s legacy.
