Students are spread across the nation for Howard University Alternative Spring Break (HUASB), March 7–14. Under the theme “Service with Impact: Empowering Communities and Dismantling Disparities” students are dedicating their time to transformative, hands-on service in 22 communities.

Since its founding in 1994, HUASB has stood as a nationally recognized service-learning program rooted in the University’s enduring motto, “Truth and Service.” Coordinated through the Office of the Dean of the Chapel and offered at no cost to students, HUASB reflects Howard’s longstanding commitment to developing principled leaders prepared to address society’s most pressing challenges.

Throughout the week, student volunteers are engaging in initiatives centered on community development, food and housing stability, education, holistic wellness, poverty alleviation, restorative justice, and youth empowerment. By partnering with local organizations and grassroots leaders, participants are not only providing meaningful service, but they are also building relationships, expanding cultural understanding, and sharpening their capacity for ethical leadership and civic engagement.

HUASB students have intentionally chosen to forgo traditional spring break activities to serve as social engineers in systematically underserved communities. Their decision reflects a shared belief that leadership is measured not solely by achievement, but by impact.

The Office of the Dean of the Chapel remains committed to removing financial barriers so that every student who feels called to serve can do so. Alumni and friends are encouraged to support HUASB with a gift to ensure students have the resources needed to create lasting change — this week and for years to come.
