Kappa Alpha Psi’s Xi Chapter Donates $105,000 for Endowed Scholarships
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity's Xi Chapter at Howard University has donated $105,000 to establish a scholarship to support the financial needs of undergraduates.
The fraternity earmarked $5,000 of the gift so the first scholarships may be available in the fall 2022 term. The remaining $100,000 will go to the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Xi Chapter Endowed Scholarship Fund to generate interest for spendable income in succeeding years.
Eligible students must be a sophomore, junior or senior with a minimum 3.2 G.P.A., a U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need and show they are engaged in campus activities.
"We are a service-oriented organization, and we hope the student will indicate that in some way," said Christopher Lemmie, Xi Chapter's advisor and chairman of its Centennial activities. Lemmie spoke of Kappa Alpha Psi's tradition of achievement and service and said the scholarship provides a point of contact for members to donate and bring along future leaders.
Chartered in 1920, Xi Chapter marked its 100th anniversary during 2021 with several activities and events, including its Centennial Gala on Sept. 11, at which Howard President Wayne A. I. Frederick accepted the donation. The chapter presented the donation on campus Nov. 22, 2021, at the Main Gate to Princess Gamble, associate vice president and COO of Development and Alumni Relations, and also placed a permanent fraternity marker on The Yard near Founders Library.
"There are still students out there who have the academic credentials" but are short on the financial means to finish their education, Lemmie said. In helping them, he said, Xi Chapter "wanted to provide a lasting legacy and to provide a productive platform to further support Howard University for the next hundred years."
