Theo Spencer is a native of Camden, NJ and a 1999 graduate of Howard University with a degree in Chemistry. During his time as a student, he volunteered as a student ambassador, was a member of the Honda Campus All-Star Academic Team and wrote for the Hilltop. After graduation, he lived in Atlanta for a year before returning to Howard to pursue a Ph. D. in Chemistry. While in graduate school, Theo started working fulltime for the university in the newly opened Information Lab (iLab). After a conversation with the director of HRIS, he volunteered to help with a special project in the HRIS department to improve the performance evaluation program. Based on his work, the time to calculate performance score data reduced from weeks to hours. At the conclusion of the project, Theo changed his career plan and enrolled in the business program at Tulane University in New Orleans and earned an MBA in 2006.
While at Tulane, Theo served as the president of the Tulane Black MBA Association and won the community service award. After Tulane, Theo moved back to his hometown in 2006 and was appointed to the school board by the mayor of Camden in 2007. Theo’s professional career spans over 20 years and includes work on consulting projects for the PGA Tour, AT&T and Comcast as well full-time work for The Wall Street Journal, Bank of America, Accenture, and JP Morgan. Theo currently works as a senior software engineer for Vanguard. Since moving back to Camden in 2006, Theo participated in alumni activities with the Howard University Alumni Club of Philadelphia. After a brief stint of inactivity due to COVID, Theo reactivated the club by serving as its first president after the pandemic. Theo also enjoys running and is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
