Homecoming weekend presents an opportunity for alumni and friends to visit diverse restaurants, bars and lounges throughout the greater Washington, D.C., area. Only a few blocks over, located on U Street, is 1942 Lounge, owned by Howard alumna Shavonne Holman (’12, B.S.) and business partner BenG.
“U Street is sacred ground in D.C. To have the opportunity to pour into a community that raised me as a young woman finding my way after Howard is truly an honor. This corridor has always been a hub for Black excellence, art and culture, and opening 1942 Lounge here allows me to both honor that legacy and create something new for this generation,” said Holman.
A first-generation college student from Brooklyn, New York, Holman sought to receive higher education at a university abundant in leadership, culture and excellence. The Mecca was where she established the foundation to thrive in every room she pursued. Now as an entrepreneur with a business located in the heart of the Howard community, she credits her ability to pivot and preserve for her current success.
“The art of pivoting is one of the most important lessons I carry, and one I want to pass on to aspiring entrepreneurs. Life won’t always go according to plan, but setbacks are often setups for something greater. Pivoting requires courage, vision and faith. It also opens doors you never imagined were yours to walk through. That’s how 1942 was born, and why I haven’t looked back,” said Holman.
1942 Lounge offers an elevated hospital and illustrious experience aimed at ensuring guests feel as though they are being welcomed home. Offering a food and drink menu that incorporates bold, savory flavors inspired by cultures across the globe, 1942 offers more than just endeavors for nightlife.
“We’ve created opportunities like study lounge nights for students, giving them a safe space to learn and collaborate. We also intentionally partner with local organizations, Black-owned brands, and highlight the culture that defines Washington, D.C. 1942 isn’t just a place to party. It’s a place to connect, grow and celebrate,” said Holman.
