Planned gifts, the gifts you arrange in the present but come to fruition at a future date, are extremely important to Howard. They not only support the University’s programs, schools and colleges, scholarships, annual fund, and more, but also allow the donor to leave an indelible legacy. Howard is the recipient of many planned/legacy gifts from alumni and friends, and we are truly grateful.

Have you considered supporting Howard with a planned gift, but your giving is influenced by prevailing myths? The following are four popular myths that we will debunk now.

Myth: You must be wealthy to make a planned gift.

  • Fact: Donors at all financial levels can make a planned gift. Howard accepts gifts of all sizes. Even a small gift can make a lasting impact. Including Howard in your estate plans for any amount is a significant way to make a difference for future generations of Bison.

Myth: I am too young to make a planned gift.

  • Fact: Donors at any age can make a planned gift. Having a will or estate plan is an important step for anyone, regardless of age. Young people are making plans for the future, and this includes creating a will and leaving a Howard legacy.

Myth: Planned giving is too complicated.

  • Fact: Many planned gifts are easy to arrange. If you have a will, you can add a few lines to include Howard. You also may include Howard as a beneficiary of your retirement plan, life insurance policy or financial account(s) by completing or updating a beneficiary designation form. The process does not require an attorney or financial advisor but is advised, if needed.

Myth: A planned gift means my family will receive less.

  • Fact: Planned gifts can be arranged so that your loved ones are taken care of first or receive a larger portion of your estate.
