159th Opening Convocation launches 2026

Howard University formally begins the academic year with the traditional Opening Convocation, at Cramton Auditorium on Friday, September 18.

The keynote address to the assembly will be given by long-time Howard employees representing the faculty and the staff.

The ceremony welcomes new and returning students to the main campus. Accordingly, classes are cancelled for the duration of the event to make it possible for students, faculty and staff to attend in person. Alumni are also welcome to attend.

The Convocation opens with a procession of the University leadership — the president, the president’s cabinet, the Board of Trustees, and the deans of the 14 schools and colleges. There are also musical tributes. Doors open at 9:30 a.m., and the event begins at 10:45 a.m.
